SALT LAKE – The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is seeking stakeholder comment through the informal rulemaking processes regarding a draft of mineral extraction rules, especially lithium extraction.
“Extracting lithium from Great Salt Lake is a unique economic opportunity for the state of Utah,” said Ben Stireman, Deputy Director of Lands and Minerals for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. “However we must engage in this process responsibly and not to the detriment of Great Salt Lake.”
FFSL is the management authority for the state’s sovereign lands and is entitled to receive royalties from mineral extraction that takes place on Great Salt Lake.
House Bill 513 from the 2023 legislative session tasked the division with creating rules related to mineral extraction on Great Salt Lake while ensuring the lake is not degraded in the process.
