Great Salt Lake Research Grants

Request for Proposals (RFP) 2008

The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands at the recommendation of the Research and Grants subcommittee of the Great Salt Lake Technical Team awarded four grants totaling over $230,000 for research project work on the Great Salt Lake. With an extremely short turnaround time of three weeks the screening team reviewed 18 excellent proposals totaling $842,000 in grant requests and over $1.1 million in total project work. Proposals came from universities, government agencies, and private consulting and/or research firms.

The Request for Proposals asked for projects that addressed four "hot topics" of broad interest on Great Salt Lake:

  1. Effects of diking on Great Salt Lake
  2. Effects of a drying lake on human health, ecosystem health, and the economy of Utah
  3. Methods to assess habitat quality of Great Salt Lake (which may include identifying indicator species)
  4. Mercury
